My Role

  • As the more experienced designer on the team, I helped navigate ambiguity and set the direction for the project

  • Led the entire user research process, from planning and execution to data analysis. Facilitated several brainstorming sessions to guide the team in ideating based on research findings

  • Led the design of the main interaction paradigm for the service and created the desktop and smartwatch interfaces. Conducted technology analysis to ensure the design's feasibility

Overview

For my capstone project at UW's MHCI+D program, my team and I identified a gap in existing language learning services: support for multilingual couples learning each other’s native languages. Through preliminary research, we discovered that couples with different native languages often share a strong and unique motivation to learn each other’s mother tongue. Our goal was to leverage this motivation and design a solution that naturally integrates into their existing relationship dynamic.

During the project, I took on project management responsibilities, helping the team set timelines and define project goals and subgoals. I also led the user research process, structuring the approach and proposing dyadic interviews as the method best suited to our unique problem space. In the design phase, I facilitated several brainstorming sessions to guide the team in transforming research insights into design concepts. Finally, I designed the core user journey and UI for both the desktop and smartwatch user flows.

The final design received positive feedback from both study participants and our industry mentors at Deloitte Digital. The core user journey and detailed interaction design were particularly well-received. Our final deliverables included a user flow, a design system, multimodal interfaces, and a video prototype.
